Thanks Riona! I’m so happy to hear the show has been helpful to you. There are lots of communities out there looking for members and I always suggest visiting and even living with them for a bit to learn more first hand about what it’s really like. Keep us posted on your journey!
I’m listening through again, I’d stepped away from the idea of intentional community in the summertime, firstly because we were moving into a new apartment and settling in and getting to know our new area, but then because of a personal issue with a, now former, best friend (we’re still friends, but not like that anymore, limited interaction etc.) That really shook my confidence in my ability to understand and organize people so I felt like starting a community was out-of-reach.
But I can’t seem to ignore the idea of at least being part of a community, in some form, whether that’s as a regular member, a founder for someone else who has a similar vision, or whether I’ll eventually find others who want to allign with me. I’m just trying to be flexible to see what could happen, so I’m listening to the episodes again with a more vague approach instead of clarity on what I want to do, absorbing, rather than planning.
That’s the best way to approach community! The more we think we know, the more unbearable we become! Lol. But seriously, in a spirit of inquiry one can make a lot more progress. Visiting communities is a really great way to start seeing more clearly what community really means.
There are a lot of communities in Portland, I want something suburban, but I think you’re right that visiting could be good. I inadvertantly visited the Columbia Ecovillage several years ago before knowing what intentional communities were for a neighbourhood workshop, its a condo style cohousing setup with common rooms on the first floor, but I didn’t get to dig in and learn about it, so I’d better visit some on purpose, even though urban life isn’t our thing.
Guess what? We went and toured Columbia Ecovillage at the start of the month! It wasn’t what we are seeking as its in Portland proper, but I took your advice to check it out, I liked how it felt there. And we’re touring Kailash Ecovillage (also in Portland and not quite for us) on Feb. 4th to see what another community will feel like. I’
Nice! If you haven’t already, taking some note about what you liked/ resonated with vs. didn’t really dig while its all still fresh will be a benefit as you continue your search.
Sorry to bump this, but I feel it’s a really cool thread…
Hello Awesome thread!!! I’ve been looking for some more podcast on this subject so this is great!! I will for sure check some of these out later tonight.
I just recently finished one and I’ve been trying to get folks to check it out. It’s one of the best I’ve found so far, I think you’ll all love it, I hope!
Here is the name:
Communes Part 1 and 2 : That American Ideal and There is a better way
Both episodes are by: Show-me Missouri Life aka Mo’Curious
You can find them on Spotify, both episodes.
There is also one episode on Youtube (maybe the second by now), here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLmdxIu1RHI&t=71s
Since 2022, I found out two other podcasts related to ICs :
The reVillager Podcast : They wanted to create an app for ICs to connect their members and a movement towards revillaging. It think the app is no longer updated but still works. It’s hard to get anything like that off the ground. 14 Episodes including some very good ones. I talked to Jasper via zoom a couple of years ago. A very kind individual.
Community Resilience : A podcast related to GEN’s 2.5 degree project. I liked some episodes. Others were not for me. Still worth checking out. The one with Dougald Hine is sooooo good !
See ya
Thanks for this !
I’ll check it out
