The word Amish and the Amish way of life have a very particular and defined meaning. To try to use the word “Amish” as a way of describing a very different way of life not only leads to deep cultural misunderstandings, but it is also remarkably impolite. A great deal of an Amish person’s life is based on the Bible. If a person decides to not follow those teachings, eventually they will be asked to leave, and the community will no longer consider them as friends or family. The Bible, and God, and a moral and decent life are inextricably linked. To be Amish, is to accept that.
Trying to use the way they dress, or the machines they use or don’t use, or their willingness to work together for the good of all, as an example for how an “english” (non-Amish) community can be formed does not understand what being Amish is.
So please, if you want to live a plain life, or use only horse power, or collectively work, then just say so. But it would be very nice to stop trying to label those life choices as similar to a very defined life that has so much more meaning and depth.

Saying “LIKE” something, is not “something”. Please try to describe what it is you want to be by whatever words and phrases you wish. But “LIKE” Amish means nothing. It just fosters false impressions of whatever it is you are seeking. ~~~Without The Bible, there is no Amish. It’s a bit like saying, I’m of German descent, but now I’ll wear the trappings of a Lakota, and maybe ride a horse. "Now I’m (LIKE) Indian. You want to live as an ancestral person, do so, say so. P.S. By the way, just for a bit more understanding. The Amish whom I know in N. Ohio, and my own Amish family, do not forego the use of gas and oil nor would they describe themselves as “minimalist”. And they certainly would not describe their beliefs as “not following the mainstream”. -And actually, many Amish now carry cell phones (for work purposes).

That’s an interesting statement. And perhaps something that many communities might think about. ~Did you know that in the time period that cars were being invented, they were thought to be one of the greatest health inventions of all time. When we were just using horses and wagons, the cities were littered with horse droppings. Which were in turn covered with flies. That carried disease into every window and home. And, the cities just smelled terrible. Cars, a very modern thing indeed, solved much of that.
Also, many homes and barns burned from the careless use of oil & kerosene lamps. And the worldwide population of whales was decimated just to get whale oil for lighting. The modern invention of electricity solved much of those two terrible problems.
When I was younger, I knew very few farmers who were not missing a finger or two, or a hand or arm. Farming is one of the most dangerous of all professions. But these days, modern safety devices on most farm equipment have lessened the risk.
The list of how much safer and better and more convenient life is with so many modern inventions, is endless. ~~None of which is to say that there haven’t also been real, unforeseen and harmful consequences to much of the same ‘good stuff’.
So, far beyond the misuse and lack of understanding of what the Amish do and how they live, it may also be well to really think about just how primitive or ancestral a person or community wants to live. Some modern things can be very good. Some, not. Trying to live exclusively as folks did 100+ years ago can mean an average life span of 45. But it can sometimes mean a much more satisfying life than sitting at a computer. Modern and “natural lifestyle” can be a very mixed pot.
